Suspense that takes place in a secret room deep underground – 10 Cloverfield Lane

3.2

Rather than the panic action from the previous film, it is better to think of it as a confinement or a suspense drama in a closed space.

Summary

After surviving a car accident, Michelle (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) wakes up to find herself in an underground bunker with two men.

By Amazon Prime Video

Is this film a sequel to the 2008 hit, ‘Cloverfield/HAKAISHA ‘? The revelation came as a delightful surprise-this film, in its own unique way, stands as a sequel to the aforementioned movie. As the narrative unfolded, the perception of safety within this space shifted, keeping me on the edge of my seat and thoroughly enjoying the unexpected twists.

Sequel to the previous film “Cloverfield/HAKAISHA”?

Contrary to its predecessor, ‘Cloverfield/HAKAISHA,’ which was a science fiction film about a human exodus from an alien-infested Earth, this film takes a different path. While it does feature a brief science fiction scene towards the end, the majority of the film is a gripping locked room suspense, depicting the horrors within a shelter. This shift in genre may surprise those expecting a flashy science fiction spectacle, but it’s a treat for fans of suspenseful dramas.

Producer J.J. Abrams describes the film as “having the same DNA” and “blood.” However, it is not a legitimate sequel to its predecessor.

No dialogue for the first 4 minutes

The film opens with the main character, Michelle, leaving her room. The film shows her hurriedly stuffing her belongings into a bag, shot in a slightly blurred image, which expresses her upset state of mind. The room is shown with a design drawing left behind, a mannequin, a ring, and the key to the room. It is really without any dialogue, and the fact that she is working (or a student) in the design field and that she had a fight with her boyfriend is skillfully expressed only through the images.

Eventually, Michelle’s car accidentally spins off the road and onto the valley floor. The credits for “Paramount” and “Bad Robot” appear in the background of the scene, but each time, the background music suddenly stops, and the screen goes black. The background music stops abruptly, and the screen goes black. It may have been intended to “give the viewer a strong impression of the distributor and production company.” Still, as in the previous film, the title sequence shows a strong attention to detail.

The characters are carefully profiled.

Starting with the confusion at the beginning, Michelle finds herself in a shelter, where she shares her life with Howard and Emmett.

As Michelle and Emmett spend time in a shelter, they open up about their past experiences of running away from each other due to their feelings of inferiority and fear. This scene may resonate with the viewer’s own experiences of regret and bitterness over runaway behavior. Despite being a locked-room suspense, the film carefully portrays the characters’ backgrounds, personalities, and psychological states of doubt and suspicion.

Howard, the shelter’s ruler, demands respect and gratitude and is quick to lash out when he doesn’t like something. His psycho side makes him practically the main character. John Goodman, a renowned American actor, plays Howard’s overwhelming presence. He is known for his talent and has won Golden Globe and Emmy Awards.

In addition to the careful portrayal of the characters, Goodman’s powerful performance adds value to the film beyond just a suspenseful plot.

There is no denying the B-class feel.

Is Howard’s statement that “the outside world is contaminated” authentic, or is it a lie to keep Michelle locked up? The storyline defied the viewer’s expectations and took two or three turns, keeping us on the edge of our seats until the very end.

However, the details of Howard’s missing daughter and the murdered girl remain unclear, leaving the film somewhat indigestible. Also, can homemade protective clothing and masks protect against poison gas? Can a single Molotov cocktail made from a liquor bottle defeat an alien? The last scene is a scene that makes you want to poke fun at it.

In the last scene, Michelle hears the news on the car radio and wonders whether she should escape to Baton Rouge’s safety or go to Houston’s danger to save people. In the end, she heads to Houston, but this scene is actually foreshadowed in the OP.

While driving away after a fight with her boyfriend Ben, Michelle receives a call on her phone from Ben. As she begs him to come back, Ben’s last words to her are, “Running away won’t solve anything.”

In the end, it is difficult to ask what I wanted to convey in this film, but I guess it is that “Michelle, who was always running away, became a person who can face difficulties head-on.

Numerous foreshadowing lines are scattered throughout

In addition to Ben’s words, there are foreshadowing and devices scattered throughout this work. I would like to introduce some of them below.

The scene where Michelle stitches Howard’s wound.

After this scene, the relationship between the two, which had been at odds with each other, becomes better. This may imply “restoration of relationship” or “restoration of trust.

The movie Howard was watching, “Pretty in Pink: Lovers on a Street Corner.

A real-life movie, it is about a poor girl, Andi, who makes her own prom dress and goes to a party. Michelle also makes a protective suit out of bathroom curtains and escapes the shelter.

The movie “Cannibal Airplane” that Michelle and Emmett were watching.

This is a fictional movie, and the packaging is used as decoration in the offices of Bad Robot Productions. Also, the spaceship that attacks Michelle after she escapes from the shelter is indeed a cannibal airplane.

Emmett heard from Howard about space worms.

The alien that attacks Michelle looks like a giant worm. This is the scene that convinces me that Howard’s story was true.

Cloverfield.

The “Cloverfield” used in the title of the film is the address in front of the offices of Bad Robot Productions, according to Wikipedeia.

Also, the image of this work differs greatly depending on the package.
