At first, I thought it was a black-and-white film, but the images became more beautiful in the second half. It was a Disney-like film based on children's literature.

Every country has what could be called a national children’s novel. The Wizard of Oz by L.F. Baum, first published in 1900, is a worldwide hit and has a strong following in the United States.
This is why The Wizard of Oz has had so many sequels, visual adaptations, and derivative works. The musical film The Wizard of Oz is the most famous, released in 1939. The film was also the subject of much discussion because of its use of Technicolor technology. The song “Over the Rainbow” appears in the movie and is also popular and is now a standard number.
As a prequel to The Wizard of Oz, this film, Oz the Great and Powerful, is set 20 years before the novel’s setting.
Prequel to The Wizard of Oz
The film Oz: The First Battle of Oz is an origin story of the great Wizard of Oz, set about 20 years before Dorothy and her friends arrive in Oz. Several films have attempted to create a prequel to The Wizard of Oz. The most famous of these is probably Wicked, but that one focuses on the Witches of the West.
The work style based on The Wizard of Oz will vary greatly depending on what it is based on. It is because the musical film version of The Wizard of Oz is as well-established as the original novel. The setting of the book and the musical film differ in places, and it is a toss-up on handling the differences. Most productions take the essence of both to create their worldviews. I felt the same way in the movie Oz the Great and Powerful, mixing elements from the novel, the musical film, and even Wicked.
Fans of The Wizard of Oz will be very interested to see which elements have been scattered and how they have been incorporated into the new film. Many films portray the true identity of the Wizard, mainly since it influences the interpretation of each of the Wizards in the original Wizard of Oz, and fans will especially enjoy seeing this film.
The newly created world of Oz
The most striking feature of Oz the Great and Powerful is its colorful visual effects. In addition to the colors, many visual tricks were designed for 3D and IMAX screenings, a trend that has been ongoing since Avatar was released in 2009.
The colorful use of color, a feature of this film, was also a feature of Oz the Great and Powerful, as the original Wizard of Oz introduced the world to a new technology of “color” called Technicolor. The romantic Oz stands out colorfully; it is straightforward to see how the colors are suppressed in the Kansas part at the beginning of the film. Also, the reproduction of scenes involving “color,” such as the yellow brick road and the green skin of the Wicked Witch of the West, which could not be left out, was very well done. They were very particular about it. The new colors, which were adjusted so they did not stand out from the original, were exquisitely blended to create a natural and unnatural atmosphere.
What seemed even more challenging and appropriate were the characters surrounding the main character, Oscar. The non-human characters, Finley the monkey and the ceramic girl, were portrayed as Oscar’s allies. It would not have been easy to make this directorial expression and cinematography realistic.
No wonder this was highly rated in terms of visual effects.
The director is a master of horror films.
Oz the Great and Powerful is a fantasy film, but it is not just a bright and happy children’s movie with a unique atmosphere. Perhaps the reason for this is that it is directed by Sam Raimi. A famous director, Raimi’s best-known work is The Evil Dead series, one of those classic horror films. Since then, the director has made many horror and comedy films, later gaining a cult following.
Raimi has also worked in fields other than horror. Perhaps best known for Sony’s “Spider-Man Trilogy,” including 2002’s Spider-Man, he followed up Oz the Great and Powerful with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. The film is a new take on the fusion of superhero and horror.
At first glance, Oz the Great and Powerful is a fantasy film by Raimi, a director who is not associated with fantasy films. However, it is a fantasy film that is not only bright but also dark and distinctly different from horror. It was easy to watch, even for those who are not fond of fantasy works that are too fancy. It may be easy for parents to approach as a work to accompany their children.
Oz the Great and Powerful, a film based on the Wizard of Oz, is a work of the American heart. The film has eye-catching visual effects and a unique atmosphere from a horror director. I thought this film was easy for both “The Wizard of Oz” lovers and those not used to watching fantasy films.
