Musical French Folktales – Beauty and The Beast

3.5

Disney's first live-action film adaptation of the French folk tale "Beauty and the Beast." There are other live-action films in itself. However, "Beauty and the Beast" is often cited as one of the best works of Disney animation. I felt that Disney put much effort into making a live-action movie based on this story.

Beauty and the Beast | Disney Movies

The animated film “Beauty and the Beast” was released in 1991 and is still discussed as a hand-drawn animation masterpiece. The characters’ expressions and movements are so rich that it is still considered a timeless masterpiece today. Based on a French folk tale, the film captivated audiences with its beautiful music and depiction. It was highly acclaimed at its release, including an unprecedented Oscar nomination for Best Picture for an animated movie. “Beauty and the Beast” was newly reborn as a live-action version in 2017. That will be the “Beauty and the Beast” I have written about this time.

It was the first animated film to win the Academy Award(R) for Best Original Composition and Theme Song.

What is Beauty and the Beast?

“Beauty and the Beast” (French: La Belle et la Bête) is a French intermarriage tale first written by Gabrielle-Suzanne de Villeneuve in 1740. The story is about a kind-hearted daughter who saves a prince magically transformed into an ugly monster. It is one of the most widely told tales of intermarriage, especially in Central Europe. It was shortened in 1756 by Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont and became known to many.

An immortal masterpiece revived in the modern age.

It must have been a very courageous decision to remake the movie “Beauty and the Beast.” The animated version was very well received, so there must have been a lot of pressure. In order to differentiate it from the animated version, they initially considered making it a straight play, but director Bill Condon’s strong desire to make a live-action musical film led them to make it a musical film.

The musical version of this film has been performed in theaters worldwide. It has been very popular, which shows the popularity of this musical. The music for this film is composed by Alan Menken, an essential part of Disney films. When you watch the live-action movie again, you will be overwhelmed by the wonderful music. It is also clear that the songs are excellent as a musical, as they explain the setting at the beginning of the film and introduce the main characters in a condensed manner. I was particularly impressed by the skillful way in which the culture and values of the 18th century, the setting of this film, are demonstrated.

In addition, the art and costumes that support the worldview are also outstanding. In particular, the yellow dress Belle wears in the scene where she dances to “Beauty and the Beast,” sung by Mrs. Potts in the middle of the film, which is also used in the poster, is terrific. Everything was a work of art, including the texture of the material, the embroidery, and the atmosphere as it swayed with the dancing.

Brushed-up version of the book.

The animated film “Beauty and the Beast (1991)” is a masterpiece. Still, I was concerned about a significant development at the climax. When Belle and her father, Maurice, are trapped underground, Chip uses Maurice’s invention to rescue them, but this scene is unrealistic and out of place even in a fantasy world. In addition, the story’s timeline is unrealistic, such as “Why did the townspeople forget the castle’s existence? There were also several oddities in the timeline, such as why the townspeople forgot about the castle’s existence. There were also several scenes where the previous scene and the next scene did not match up visually, which was pointed out by many because of the film’s popularity.

Many of these inconsistencies have been corrected in the live-action version of the film. In the climactic scene, I pointed out that Berthe Maurice is trapped in the back of the truck, but Bell uses his resourcefulness to escape. The scene that leads to this resourcefulness is symbolically depicted, strengthening the message rather than contradicting it. The addition of a detailed timeline resolved many of the questions that had been raised. Most of the minor visual errors pointed out had also been corrected. Thus, by correcting mistakes, improving the realistic development of the story, and reinforcing the story’s background that was lacking, the work has been brushed up and made more convincing.

The Significance of Re-creating “Beauty and the Beast” in the Modern Age.

Suppose the film “Beauty and the Beast” is to be made over again in the present. In that case, it must be presented with a significance appropriate to the times. I feel that this film does an excellent job of explaining that significance. The animated version of “Beauty and the Beast” was initially created to portray a feminist heroine in response to criticism that the heroine in “The Little Mermaid” and other Disney films was depicted in a sexist manner. However, the film received a lot of criticism for portraying the Beast even more crudely than the original. The heroine image of Belle, who is happy with such a man, was thought to have the potential to promote domestic violence. In the end, she remains a heroine who sacrifices herself for her father.

The live-action version of “Beauty and the Beast” responds to these criticisms and, at the same time, creates a new feminist image of Belle as a heroine. The film stars Emma Watson, an actress who symbolizes the modern feminist movement. It presents a picture of a heroine that had never been seen in Disney films, such as not forcing women to wear corsets, allowing women to invent their things, and creating a background of the Beast’s character so that his intelligence and empathy for Belle will move her heart. This heroine image had yet to exist in Disney’s previous works. By including other messages, such as racial and sexual diversity, it could be said that the year is 2010, 10 years after the 21st century. The significance of recounting “Beauty and the Beast” has been clarified.

Beauty and the Beast remains a timeless classic. It was musical in style, almost like The Sound of Music. Of course, Emma Watson plays the heroine Belle, and Luke Evans plays Gaston. They have stepped out of a Disney cartoon.

While preserving the original’s great music and engaging storyline, the addition of necessary background, correction of mistakes, improvement to a more realistic plot, and reworking of themes appropriate to tell in the present make this a film worthy of release in the 2010s. The new live-action version of “Beauty and the Beast” was a Disney film for family and friends to enjoy.
