It was a well-done live-action manga adaptation! The manga is a 31-volume long work, and this is the beginning of the third volume. The strong worldview and characters of the original work were well reproduced. Authentic Action Japanese Movie Golden Kamuy.

I highly recommend this place!
- The battle at 203 Highlands at the film's beginning alone shows how great this work is!
- It is a live-action adaptation of a comic book. Still, it creates an original character without any sense of cosplay!
- Action, gags, Hokkaido background. Everything is wonderfully directed!

From the very beginning, you are made to feel that the action is at a high level!
The film opens with a fierce battle at Nijusan Highlands, the site of the Russo-Japanese War, where the “immortal Sugimoto” was born. This action scene drew me into the power of this film and its worldview.
I had not seen such an action scene in a long time. The action in large groups was not flashy with CG but focused on human-on-human combat with bullets. In terms of impact upon viewing, it has the same impact as Steven Spielberg’s film “Private Ryan.” It’s more entertaining action than Private Ryan.
This fierce battle is a traumatic experience for most of the characters in the film and the reason for their quest for gold.
The 203rd Highland begins with the Japanese soldiers assaulting Sugimoto and his men, and then they head for the Russian trenches. This scene featured not only Sugimoto but also Ogata and Tanigaki.
Full of charm unique to the live-action version
This film is a live-action adaptation of Satoru Noda’s Golden Kamui (Young Jump Comics).
Set in Hokkaido in the late Meiji Era, this title tells the story of Saichi Sugimoto, who returns from the Russo-Japanese War, and an Ainu girl named Ashilipa, who is pursuing hidden Ainu reserves. The film is an “action adventure in search of a huge treasure trove of gold” set in historical fact while adding an element of entertainment. The film is an action movie and a rich depiction of Ainu and Hokkaido’s food culture, conveying the passion for and appreciation of food and its delicacies. The story is also based on natural, historical backgrounds, linking the fictional story to the actual history.
The fascination of the original story has been reproduced in the live-action film version without equal. The strength of Sugimoto, the main character in the original story, is called “Sugimoto, the Immortal,” as are his motives for pursuing the gold and the sensitive side of his heart that he sometimes shows. The actors also brought out the cute side of Asilipa, the Ainu living in Hokkaido, when she interacted with the animals and plants living in Hokkaido and ate delicious meals. Especially impressive was Hiroshi Tamaki, who played Lieutenant Tsurumi, the leader of the 7th Division!
I thought he played the character with both charisma and insanity, similar to Batman’s Joker, with his maniacal power and smile, as well as his visuals!
Also, the cold, relentless wind, and stamping on the snow in the frozen Hokkaido region where this work is set to stimulate the sense of touch and make you feel the cold just by looking at it.
Latest digital technology
The production of this film was handled by CREDEUS, just like the live-action “Kingdom.” And the VFX production, Spade&Co.
It is truly unique! The CG brown bear attacking Sugimoto is so powerful and realistic that it reminds me of the grizzly bear that slows down Leonardo DiCaprio in the movie “The Revenant”
Letala had a furry texture that made me want to hug her and an expression so expressive that I tried to pet her.
The film was made using a combination of CG and animatronics.
Recently, the white team’s “Godzilla-1.0” was a big hit, and I hope that more films like “Golden Kamuy” and “Kingdom” will make full use of VFX.
