A murder takes place in a locked room in the middle of a snowstorm. The murderer is sure to be in the room as he solves the murder. However, there are many characters.

Murder on the Orient Express | 20th Century Studios
Agatha Christie, known as the “Queen of Mystery,” is an author who continues to be loved worldwide. Hercule Poirot, one of the famous detectives she created, is one of the most well-known detectives in the world. Kenneth Branagh is the new actor who plays Poirot, who many actors have played in the past. Kenneth Branagh is also the director of this film. Branagh, also known as “the second coming of Laurence Olivier,” has reconstructed Poirot and written Christie’s masterpiece, “Murder on the Orient Express,” now available to the world.

Branagh’s version of Poirot begins here.
“Murder on the Orient Express” is the first in a series of projects that Branagh will direct and star in himself. The original was so well-known, and there was already a hit film version, that it attracted significant attention, along with the significance of re-filming the story in the 21st century. Although the critical acclaim for the film was not outstanding, the film was later made into an official series due to box-office revenues that exceeded expectations. This film is the first in the “Branagh’s Poirot” series.
- Budget: $55 million
- Worldwide box office: approx. $350 million
Christie’s work is so famous that “Murder on the Orient Express” comes to mind, and to play Poirot in a film directed by Agatha Christie himself seemed like quite a high hurdle to overcome. However, it would be a different story if Kenneth Branagh was going to do it. Kenneth Branagh has starred in many films that he has directed. He has starred in many of the films he has directed, not only on film but on stage. In addition, he has worked primarily with the works of William Shakespeare, the world-renowned English playwright. He has taken on subjects that are inevitably compared to his other works. He would inevitably take on the masterpiece of another leading British mystery writer.
One of Branagh’s Poirot’s characteristics is that he has the most prominent beard compared to the previous generations of Poirot. It is a bold performance based on the original interpretation that the beard is a cover for Poirot. Still, This boldness speaks volumes about Branagh’s character.

Gorgeous lineup of talented artists
The movie “Murder on the Orient Express” has assembled a splendid cast. One of the characteristics of “Branagh’s version of Poirot” is that it features actors who are active and current in the world of film while at the same time featuring talented actors who have steadily established themselves on the stage and elsewhere.
One of Branagh’s most significant achievements was using Johnny Depp as the key man, Edward Ratchet. Although he appeared in very few scenes, his performance was very memorable and added a lot of conviction to the film. Many people were surprised that Depp took on this role, perhaps because of the short length of his performance. He must have understood the importance of his role in the film because he seemed to value the meaning of his performance regardless of the length of time he appeared.
The presence of Dame Judi Dench as the Duchess of Dragomirov is a testament to the strength of the trust between Branagh and Dench. Dench is a regular in Branagh’s productions and has worked with him on numerous productions for both film and stage. For Branagh, who hopes to make a series out of this successful production, this is the starting point for a significant project. It must have been reassuring for him to have Dench, whom he trusts, on board. Dench himself brought depth to the film with his outstanding performance.
Quick’s role in Henry V and Mrs. Elinor in Karaoke is in the list above.
In addition, Branagh has tapped Daisy Ridley for the heroine-like position in the film. She gained instant attention for her starring role as Rey in Episodes 7 through 9 of the “Star Wars” series. However, at the time of the film’s release in 2017, she still had little to show for her work outside of the Star Wars universe. A typical Branagh point to cast a young, up-and-coming British actress like her. Other casting choices also emphasized diversity throughout. Branagh’s typical direction was evident in the cast, as the role played by Penelope Cruz was changed from the original.
Stylish Christie, typical of Branagh
In the movie “Murder on the Orient Express,” other Branagh-like performances shone through. One example is the scene in which Poirot stares back at his reflection in the mirror. The mirror is a technique used by many directors, but Branagh has used it in many of his films. Branagh is also a director who is particular about his artwork. One of his characteristics is creating beautiful shadows that can be cut out as shadow pictures. The scene at the film’s end, with all the actors standing side by side, is modeled after Leonardo da Vinci’s painting, “The Last Supper. This direction may coincide with the fact that the beginning of the film begins at the Wall of Sorrows. Still, this kind of pictorial composition is also typical of Branagh’s direction.
This work is so well-known that reworking it as a mystery would be difficult. Therefore, Branagh may have dared to restructure it as a work with less mystery, more stylish visuals, and a new interpretation by combining it with paintings.
However, the characters and their backgrounds were poorly explained, which may have been possible in a 13-episode drama. Still, connecting the characters and their positions took a lot of work in 2 hours. It might have been different if it were a 12-episode drama. I recommend reading the original novel.
However, the new film adaptation of the too-famous and enduring classic, “Murder on the Orient Express,” with Branagh-esque direction and casting, was well received, and the film was later made into a successful series. This film could be the beginning of a new series, so I recommend this film as a new way to enjoy a classic mystery.
