2.3

The setting was attractive and not too heavy-handed, but it was a disappointing lousy movie.

I highly recommend this place!

  • Tense and violent action unfolds in a limited space.
  • An unusual worldview where all crimes are legalized only once a year.
  • The human drama between families in tense situations

Summary

In a crime-ridden future America, the government has set aside one night a year where all criminal activity--including murder--is legal.

Violent scenes from the opening

This film opens with a series of violent scenes captured by a security camera, which creates an atmosphere of violence. It seems to be a movie for adults 18 or older, and the scenes of violence are pretty exciting.

It is as if the film says, “This is a violent film. If you don’t like it, please don’t watch it.

What is the “Purge?”

First of all, it is necessary to explain what the “Purge Law” is.

The Purge Law was established in the United States after the economic collapse by a group calling itself the “Founding Fathers of the New America,” the rules seem to be as follows.

  • All crimes, including murder, are legal for 12 hours out of the year.
  • Any weapon may be used (note: no weapons above level 4).
  • No attacks on government employees of rank ten and above.
  • All police, fire, and medical services will be suspended during the Purge.

The Purge Law was introduced so that people could legally vent their daily resentments and grudges on this day, which led to a quiet life outside of this day, deterring crime and reducing unemployment.
Incidentally, the English word “purge” has the meaning of “to purge,” “to sweep away,” and “to wash clean. Is it a way of saying that we want to “purge and cleanse” people who are a stain on society on this once-a-year night?
The victims of the “purge” are people experiencing poverty. On the night of the Purge, when all kinds of crimes are legalized, the victims are the poor who have no means to protect themselves.

The irony is that those who have made their fortunes thanks to the Purge are the targets of the Purge.

The protagonist of this film, James Sandin, played by Ethan Hawke, is a salesman for security equipment installed in homes and is such a supporter of the Purge that he preaches to his children that the Purge is a beautiful system that will reduce the crime rate in the city. The Sandin family is a wealthy family with a mansion, and rich people are safe on the night of the Purge as long as they are confined to their homes, protected by lavishly priced security equipment.
The irony is that Sandin’s son has become a target of the Purge himself because he has sheltered an impoverished man who had been targeted by the Purge. Even more unfortunate is the double irony that the Purgers (participants in the Purge) break into his own home after the faulty security device he was selling with his salesman’s clout is defeated.
James Sandin was a salesman who made his fortune selling security devices to wealthy neighbors. The only reason he sold so many security devices was the annual Purge. It was a match-pumping business.

A low-budget but very successful movie.

The story is a drama that takes place solely in the house of James Sandin, played by Ethan Hawke. There are no flashy explosion scenes, and except for the actors, the film has a low-budget, B-grade feel (the production cost was $3 million). However, the film’s direction is not B-grade, and tense music and other techniques to create a sense of tension are good.

The Purge – Box Office Mojo

The return on the initial investment is tremendous. Incidentally, the production cost of the first “Jurassic World” is said to be $150 million, which means that this movie was made on a low budget, one-fifth of that of Jurassic World.

Ethan Hawke and Lena Headey to Play Husband and Wife

Ethan Hawke, the famous actor who was twice nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, and Lena Headey, famous for her role as Cersei Lannister in the very popular fantasy drama Game of Thrones, play a married couple.

Lena Headey plays Mary Sandin, the main character’s wife. She is not a woman with a strong presence like Cersei Lannister but a very ordinary, slightly nervous-looking housewife.

What I liked about it

The setting is attractive, but there are a lot of clunky parts.

The Sandin family allows the Purgers to break in too quickly.

If there is a risk of being attacked by a group of people on the night of the “Purge,” I would think they would need to put bars on all the windows to protect them. Still, they quickly broke the glass and allowed entry from various points. It was not right.

All the Purgers are wearing masks with creepy smiles on their faces.

On the night of the Purge, all crimes are legalized. This means that they don’t have to hide their faces, but they are wearing masks, which makes no sense. Is it some ceremonial significance? Is it a daring horror show?

The women happily participate in the nightly carnage of the Purge.

Participating in the Purge, the act of participating in the Purge means that “there is always a risk that you will be killed too. Nevertheless, the fact that the women were happily participating in the Purge with knives and that they did not feel threatened by the possibility that they might be killed still made me feel uncomfortable.
