Master Leo’s Longest Survival – The Revenant

4.0

The harshness and beauty of the wilderness winter when the American old-growth forests were still alive were fully expressed in this film. The constant snowstorms, the clear blue sky and air after the snow subsided, and even the coldness of the water were all conveyed to the viewer through this film.

The Revenant by Regency Enterprises

DiCaprio’s true-to-life survival drama. The Revenant: The Resurrection” was the talk of the town at the 88th Academy Awards, winning awards for Best Director, Best Actor, and Best Cinematography. However, this film could have won awards at international festivals such as Cannes, Berlin, and Venice rather than the Academy Awards. It was a captivating film with pictures like Takita’s Tenchi Meisatsu and Wakamatsu’s Tsugezaka no Avenger.

Undoubtedly, the most significant accolade was the first-ever Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role for Leonardo DiCaprio, fondly known as “Master Leo.” This win was particularly noteworthy as DiCaprio had been a consistent nominee for his leading roles in films like “The Aviator,” but had not clinched any awards. His long-cherished desire to win an Academy Award became a global talking point, adding to the film’s legacy.

The film’s music was composed by Ryuichi Sakamoto, who also attracted much attention in Japan.

DiCaprio and Tom Hardy’s performances are so convincing that it is difficult to distinguish them.

The first thing that catches the eye about “The Revenant” is Leonardo DiCaprio’s appearance. He plays the role of Hugh Glass, a real-life character, and his long hair and beard are pretty striking. In the fight scene with the bear, one of the film’s highlights, he gives such a dynamic performance that one wonders if this is DiCaprio. I had never seen DiCaprio in such a physical action scene before, so I felt his pride as an actor when I saw him covered in blood, mud, sweat, tears, snot, and even drooling in this scene.

Tom Hardy’s performance as Fitzgerald, the film’s antagonist, was a masterclass in complexity. I have to confess that I couldn’t tell that Fitzgerald was Hardy for a while. It was a convincing performance, which is no wonder DiCaprio personally asked the director to cast Hardy in the film. Fitzgerald is not a simple villain, but a character who desperately tries to survive. This film is a revenge drama, so I suppose I should be more inclined to root for Glass, but I felt it was a wonderful performance that made it impossible to hate Fitzgerald, who was just struggling to survive.

Hungry spirit to beat grizzly bears

What surprised me as much as the actors’ performances was the indomitable spirit of the main character, Glass. The fight scene with the grizzly bear was so spectacular that I wondered more than once how he could not die. I often asked how he did not die in the fight with the grizzly bear. What is even more surprising is that this is a true story. The story of how he was attacked by a grizzly bear, severely wounded, and abandoned by his fellow travelers but survived is something of a legend that has been passed down in the United States for many years.

The full facts are not known until the actual adventure that Glass went on. Nevertheless, he indeed survived a very long distance while seriously injured, and this fact is depicted in the film. The way he survives to take revenge on Fitzgerald for his son’s murder, despite the many times he could have died, is truly a remarkable sight to behold. It was a series of scenes that made me think that no matter how many lives I have, they will never be enough. All of the scenes took place in icy mountains covered with snow, and even though I was shivering and it looked freezing, I couldn’t help but feel my hands sweating and my head burning with excitement.

The icy region in the pioneer days of the West

It is easy to imagine how difficult it must have been to shoot “The Revenant,” given that it won the Academy Award for Best Cinematography. Most of the film was shot in a snowy landscape, and shooting in the polar regions must have been extremely difficult for the crew and the cast. Nevertheless, the director’s insistence on shooting in natural light conveys through the screen the dormitory aspect of the horror of nature and the bust with nature.

The culture of the indigenous people of the North American continent teaches us to live with such harsh nature. In this film, Glass’s wife is Indigenous, and his son also has Indigenous blood. Therefore, there are scenes in which the father and son speak in the language of the indigenous people. In addition, if depicted, struggles with the indigenous people can also be saved against them. The references to the indigenous people and their culture that appear in the play are characteristic of the film. Most of the “life” and “death” in the movie involve indigenous cultures, which made me think deeply about nature and the cycle of life. At the same time, I felt that this work made me think about the history of white settlement in the Americas. As the film depicts the battles between indigenous peoples and whites, as well as between indigenous peoples, it made me think about various things, such as what is right and wrong.

This film is demanding for the performers, the producers, and the audience. The overwhelming horror of nature, the indomitable spirit to overcome the horror, and the authentic performances of the actors who convey this horror make the film’s excellent screen contrast with the many scenes that will make your hands sweat. The film itself is long, so it is one that you should prepare yourself to see before you watch it.

And DiCaprio’s performance, which could be described as “full-bodied” or “obsessive,” is enough to win the Best Actor award. You can feel the enthusiasm of the actors and the production team for what they have done.
